the client is seeking an accomplished cardiothoracic transplant surgical leader to serve as the Surgical Director of Cardiothoracic Transplantation. This role will create and advance a state-of-the-art cardiothoracic transplant program, integrating heart and lung transplant services under a unified transplant and cardiology/lung care structure. The Surgical Director will collaborate with institute leadership to expand transplant services, increase volumes, promote cutting-edge, evidence-based clinical care, and engage referring physicians to improve regional access for transplant-eligible patients.
Primary responsibilities include developing and expanding the cardiothoracic transplant program, which currently performs approximately 30 heart transplants annually, along with multi-organ transplants, single and double-lung transplants, and lung re-transplants. The program has a strong foundation with upward trends in surgical volumes, quality metrics, and outcomes, supported by recent additions of thoracic and aortic specialists. Building on this base, the Surgical Director will lead heart and lung transplant services with a focus on program growth, quality, recruitment, and the continuous improvement of patient outcomes.
Requirements include an M.D. with board certification(s) by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and eligibility for unrestricted licensure for Louisiana. Advanced expertise in surgical cardiothoracic transplantation is required, with cardiac transplantation preferred. The role also expects broad surgical capability in cardiothoracic disease management, well-trained knowledge of current donor techniques, a track record of clinical excellence, and strong collaboration and communication with referring providers. The Surgical Director must demonstrate proven leadership with an integrated approach to care and program growth, a strong orientation to patient-centered care, quality improvement, and team building, and the ability to foster an environment that supports initiative, innovation, and continual learning while maintaining professional competence and ethical standards.
