The client is seeking a Staff Attorney for a Family Defense Project to provide high-quality legal representation to parents in dependency cases where representation by another unit is not possible due to a conflict of interest. The role supports parents through advice, limited services, referrals, and/or extended representation, and works as part of an interdisciplinary legal team to engage parents throughout the dependency process. The position emphasizes strong advocacy both in and outside of court, prioritizing client relationships, clear communication, and thorough case preparation to support safe and lasting reunification.
Responsibilities include representing parents by preparing, filing, and arguing pleadings aligned with client goals, conducting factual investigation, legal research, and analysis as needed, and developing case theory and strategy. The attorney will conduct preliminary and subsequent interviews, keep clients informed and advise them on options, and prepare written submissions such as complaints, answers, legal memoranda, and briefs. The role also includes representing clients in negotiations, hearings, trials, and appeals, monitoring and closing client files in accordance with program policies, maintaining case records to required standards, and entering time in a timely manner.
The attorney will stay current on relevant law through ongoing training and updates, support screening and referral processes as needed, and may assist with project sustainability efforts and evaluation in collaboration with management. The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, excellent interpersonal and client service abilities, and efficient computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Admission to practice in Pennsylvania or eligibility for admission in Pennsylvania is required, and the attorney must have efficient transportation to locations other than the office as needed for work.
