Description

The client is seeking a Specialist Volunteer to join its Board and support governance activities. This role is expected to bring relevant skills in one or more of the following areas: finance (preferred), human resources, governance, and experience engaging with the public sector. The Specialist Volunteer will help strengthen board-level oversight, contribute to effective decision-making, and support strategic direction across these functions.

For the finance focus, the role calls for substantial experience in financial management, audit, or accountancy, along with the ability to oversee financial controls, ensure compliance with statutory obligations and recognized accounting standards, and support senior-level strategic financial planning. For the human resources focus, candidates are expected to have experience in HR management or related people-management, with a proven track record in recruitment, employee relations, legislative compliance, and the development or implementation of HR policies and procedures. For the governance focus, candidates should have experience in non-profit or corporate governance, policy development, or risk management, with demonstrated ability to ensure compliance with charity and company law, regulatory frameworks, and board best practice, including implementation of strategic oversight and risk mitigation.

For candidates aligned to public sector engagement, the role expects experience working with the public sector and demonstrated ability in that engagement. Beyond the specialized areas, essential expectations include a shared understanding of the client’s purpose regarding young people and people/human development, a proven track record in at least one required expertise area, an appreciation of the not-for-profit sector, strong problem-solving skills with follow-through on decisions, and strong communication and interpersonal skills. Desirable considerations include prior experience as a board member/director at a similar scale, pre-existing relationships with the client, and volunteer experience.
