The client seeks a deeply experienced, relationship-driven philanthropic leader for the role of Senior Vice President and Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO). The CPO will bring together philanthropic support from around the world to advance the institution’s mission and help complete a major multi-year fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $2.5 billion. Under the CPO’s leadership, philanthropic priorities will focus on accelerating breakthroughs, improving treatments, elevating the patient experience, and expanding the institution’s reach to more patients.
The CPO will serve as a highly visible institutional leader, participating on the President’s Executive Leadership Team (ELT), attending regular executive meetings and strategy retreats, and maintaining close working relationships with senior executives. In partnership with the President, the CPO will drive fundraising strategy and execution and will play an active role in strategic planning and decision-making. The role maintains a reporting line to the Executive Vice President (EVP) of Institutional Advancement and leads a large team of approximately 200 professionals.
The ideal candidate will have at least 10 to 15 years of senior-level management experience within a complex organization, preferably involving academic medicine, clinical and basic research, and/or a university environment. The candidate should demonstrate a strong record of success securing and stewarding principal gifts at the eight- and ideally nine-figure levels, with the interpersonal and leadership skills to motivate and guide a large, matrixed team during periods of change. The role requires the ability to engage key leaders in the fundraising process and a personal commitment to the client’s mission and values through a servant leadership approach.
