The client is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join its team. This role is a commercially minded, strategic, and business-facing position within a collaborative legal department, advising on complex matters in a dynamic environment and providing proactive, value-added counsel to support informed business decision making.
Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, the Senior Legal Counsel will serve as a legal and strategic leader for Canadian leadership teams while supporting global initiatives and strategies. Key responsibilities include providing day-to-day legal support to the business to ensure compliance with applicable laws; partnering with business leaders on strategic decisions; coordinating with senior legal leadership on matters, transactions, or assignments as appropriate; managing complex and sensitive assignments and recommending legal strategies; advising on legal rights and obligations; and negotiating, drafting, and reviewing high-risk and high-value regional and global contracts.
The role will focus on areas such as business development and/or M&A; procurement, insurance claims, and risk management; litigation and legal claims management; data security and privacy; commercial real estate and facilities; and environment, health, and safety, as well as digital and IT. The candidate will typically hold an LL.B. or J.D. (or equivalent) and be in good standing with a Canadian Law Society (preferably Alberta), with 10+ years of corporate commercial law experience and strong analytical and negotiating skills, along with excellent communication, leadership, judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while prioritizing a high volume of work.
