The client seeks a seasoned, purpose-driven President and Chief Executive Officer to lead a complex public health system in a highly visible public governance environment. The role provides executive leadership and judgment to advance system-wide strategy and steward the organization through a period of evolution, with expectations for transparency, equity, and performance. The President and CEO serves as the chief executive of the Maricopa County Special Health Care District, doing business as the client, and is accountable to a publicly elected Board of Directors for overall performance, strategic direction, and long-term sustainability.
Working closely with the Board, the President and CEO serves as the organization’s principal representative with community leaders, governmental officials, academic partners, and other key stakeholders. The role holds ultimate responsibility for operational, financial, and clinical performance, ensuring delivery of high-quality, equitable, and compassionate care in compliance with regulatory and accrediting standards. A critical dimension of the role is the partnership with the District Medical Group, an affiliated nonprofit physician organization that employs and manages the physicians and advanced practice providers serving the client, supporting alignment across clinical care, academic programming, physician engagement, and financial sustainability.
The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in healthcare administration, business administration, public health, or a related field, and may have fellowship or comparable professional credentials in a healthcare executive organization. The client expects significant senior executive leadership experience in a complex healthcare environment such as an academic medical center or public hospital system, particularly within contexts involving public accountability, multi-stakeholder governance, and evolving reimbursement dynamics. Demonstrated experience working directly with a governing board in a public setting is strongly preferred, along with the ability to build trust, communicate complex issues clearly, and lead with transparency, as well as a track record of effective partnership with physicians and clinical leaders within integrated or closed medical staff models.
