Description

The role of Mainframe Engineer Director involves leading and expanding a mainframe automation group at an enterprise level. The position requires hands-on leadership to manage the development and training of a high-performing team, as well as troubleshooting complex issues. The director will own the mainframe automation strategy and roadmap, focusing on enhancing reliability, detection, and recovery by collaborating with various stakeholders to prioritize investments that reduce operational risk.

Key responsibilities include building, leading, and developing a skilled team in REXX, z/OS automation, DevOps, and integration. The director will provide technical leadership in frameworks, system state management, and multi-site failover automation. Additional duties involve scaling automated solutions using APIs, orchestration, and infrastructure-as-code, establishing engineering practices like peer reviews and change management, and defining operational standards to reduce MTTA/MTTR. The role also demands partnering with infrastructure leaders, application teams, and vendors, while managing KPIs and communicating performance and risks to senior leadership.

Required qualifications include extensive experience leading mainframe automation in large, multi-site environments, with a proven track record in resilience and disaster recovery automation, including GDPS and Safeguarded Copy. Expert-level knowledge of REXX scripting and z/OS is essential, along with proficiency in DevOps tooling, REST API integrations, and event correlation platforms. Familiarity with financial services, SQL, JCL, ISPF/TSO, and discipline in change management is preferred. The anticipated salary range is $300,000 to $400,000 annually, with a comprehensive benefits package. This employer provides equal employment opportunity and accommodation as required during the application process.
