The client seeks a Legal Director to lead all food and nutrition legal work and supervise legal staff and consultants in close collaboration with the Food and Nutrition Program leads. The role provides leadership, strategic planning, and technical advice to support in-country advocacy campaigns and strategic litigation by analyzing legal contexts for policy reform; drafting and reviewing pending legislation and regulations; and advising on strategic litigation approaches that advance program goals. The Legal Director will work with program leadership, legal and program teams, and local and global partners to align legal efforts with broader advocacy strategies.
As head of the food and nutrition legal team, the Legal Director will manage, mentor, and coordinate legal issues and approaches across the program as needed. Responsibilities include guiding high-quality legal analyses of legislation, regulations, and related initiatives at global, national, and/or subnational levels; identifying legislative gaps to inform policy-change priorities; assisting with drafting legislation or regulations and providing ongoing support as drafts evolve; and supporting the development and maintenance of legislative drafting tools and resources to improve first-time legislative efforts and to compare weaknesses in specific provisions. The role also includes oversight of development of resource materials and tools that support policy advancement.
The Legal Director will serve on the Food and Nutrition Leadership Team and contribute to the program’s management and strategic direction, including plans for growth and ensuring consistently high-quality legal support. The position is expected to increase program visibility of legal work in relevant policy areas and to develop an overall strategic vision for the legal function, promoting links with international and in-country legal partners. The role will provide leadership in coordinating legal advocacy priorities and strengthening the capacity of lawyers through tailored training and technical assistance frameworks, including guidance for developing high-quality, program-specific support approaches.
