The client is seeking an experienced Interim Director of Midwifery to lead a critical, multi-site maternity service during a period of heightened scrutiny and operational challenge. This executive-level interim role focuses on maintaining the continued delivery of safe, high-quality maternity and neonatal care while strengthening service stability and responsiveness to a diverse population.
You will provide visible strategic and operational leadership across all sites, reporting at an executive level. Key responsibilities include ensuring maternity services remain safe, effective, and on track; providing oversight and assurance on patient safety by identifying and addressing risks; and leading delivery against expected outcomes from an upcoming CQC inspection, including driving and implementing improvements in line with expected standards. The role also involves acting on inspection findings and recommendations, addressing inequalities associated with areas of high deprivation to support equitable outcomes, and engaging with internal concerns to foster openness, safety, and continuous improvement.
The ideal candidate will be able to quickly establish authority and build confidence across the organization. You are expected to bring proven senior experience operating at Band 9 (or equivalent) level, with a strong track record in quality, safety, and governance within maternity services, and confidence leading in complex multi-site environments. You should also have experience leading organizations through regulatory scrutiny (including CQC), a deep understanding of health inequalities and population health challenges, and a background in senior-level coaching and facilitation.
