The client seeks an inaugural dean for a newly established School of Public Health. The school is being created to address urgent public health challenges facing Detroit, Southeast Michigan, and the nation, unifying existing public health programs and faculty across multiple colleges and departments. The dean will help shape the school’s mission as a hub for interdisciplinary scholarship, education, and service, building on an established commitment to urban health and community-based change.
The inaugural dean will lead the launch by setting structure, culture, and strategic direction, guided by foundational work of an executive committee and multiple working groups. Key responsibilities include overseeing accreditation efforts, fostering partnerships with the community and health systems, and positioning the school as a national model for urban public health innovation. The role will also support interprofessional education, translational research, and health equity within a collaborative university and health sciences enterprise.
The ideal candidate will bring significant academic leadership experience and deep knowledge of public health education, research, and practice, along with the vision, adaptability, and relationship-building skills needed to launch and grow a mission-driven school. Applications, nominations, referrals, and inquiries should be submitted electronically in confidence. The client is an equal employment opportunity employer.
