The client seeks a Hospital Chief Executive Officer to provide strategic, operational, and financial leadership for a county-owned public health care system and Level II Trauma Center serving the diverse communities of Monterey County. The organization delivers comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, emergency, diagnostic, and specialty care to adults and children regardless of ability to pay or immigration status. The CEO will oversee a mission-focused, safety-net hospital that also provides trauma care, teaching functions, and a range of women’s and children’s services, including specialized clinical programs and specialty care.
The CEO will be responsible for advancing high-quality patient care, long-term sustainability, workforce engagement, regulatory compliance, and community impact. The role includes balancing fiscal discipline with thoughtful investment, identifying opportunities to responsibly expand services, and strengthening the organization’s position as a trusted provider of choice throughout Monterey County. The CEO will lead an executive team that typically includes senior clinical, nursing, financial, and information leadership, supported by assistant hospital administrators.
This role requires a politically astute, highly collaborative executive comfortable operating within a visible public-sector governance structure and working effectively across multiple governing bodies. The CEO will build trusted relationships with county leadership, elected officials, legislators, medical staff, employees, labor representatives, community leaders, donors, and regional health care partners. The incoming CEO is expected to maintain and enhance the organization’s existing strengths while positioning the hospital to respond to a rapidly changing health care, financial, and political environment.
