Description

We are partnering with The client to appoint their first Head of Payroll. This is a unique opportunity to establish and lead an in-house payroll function as it transitions away from an outsourced payroll provider. Reporting directly to the Finance Director, the role will take full ownership of payroll strategy and operations, including the implementation of a new payroll system and the creation of robust processes, controls, and governance to support future business growth.

The position is initially hands-on, with responsibility for the accurate and timely delivery of end-to-end payroll for approximately 200 employees. You will process payroll for a mix of permanent employees and self-employed workers, including commissions, variable pay, and TRONC arrangements. Key responsibilities include leading the transition from outsourced to fully in-house payroll, evaluating, selecting, and overseeing a new payroll system, and serving as a payroll subject matter expert for payroll legislation, compliance, and best practice.

You will build strong partnerships across Finance, HR, and operational teams to ensure payroll integrates seamlessly across the business, while influencing senior stakeholders and driving continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will have significant end-to-end payroll experience at a Payroll Manager level or equivalent, along with experience bringing payroll in-house or implementing a payroll system, and a strong understanding of payroll legislation, governance, controls, and compliance. Experience in a multi-site, customer-facing environment and exposure to commissions, variable pay, and/or TRONC are preferred, as is proven leadership capability and a strategic mindset balanced with willingness to remain hands-on where needed. The working pattern is hybrid, with an expected schedule of working from the office three days per week until January 2027, moving to fully office-based thereafter.
