Description

The client is seeking a faithful, authentic, and forward-thinking General Secretary/Chief Executive Officer (GS/CEO) to lead a non-profit agency serving the church since the 1940s. The GS/CEO plays a critically important role in supporting necessary change to help the denomination achieve a sustainable future. This leadership position is accountable for the organization’s financial plan and budgets, the collection and distribution of revenues, and the protection of the legal rights and interests of the denomination, while promoting fiscal integrity, strategic alliance building, and steadfast leadership within a highly decentralized structure.

Reporting to the client’s Board of Directors, the GS/CEO leads the organization and staff in defining goals and facilitating responsibilities in alignment with the church’s mission and ministry. The GS/CEO serves as Treasurer of the client and as General Treasurer of the denomination’s General Conference, and also participates as an ex officio board member of affiliated insurance and investment-related boards. The GS/CEO collaborates with a broad range of connectional partners, oversees an executive leadership team and a total staff of 57, and works to advance challenging objectives through strong relational and strategic capabilities across constituencies.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership and a deep commitment to the organization’s mission as both a ministry and a provider of financial, managerial, and investment services. The role requires sound judgment, fiscal acumen in interpreting financial information and aligning budgets with strategic priorities, strong strategic skills to attain challenging objectives, excellent communication, the ability to interact effectively with constituents at all levels, and political astuteness suited to a denominational leadership context. Requirements include an advanced degree and substantial experience in executive-level financial or administrative leadership within a multi-layered organization, preferably with some experience as a chief executive; it is also required that the GS/CEO be an active member of a congregational community within the denomination.
