The client seeks an experienced and passionate General Counsel to serve as the organization’s chief legal officer and strategic advisor to the CEO, Board of Directors, and executive leadership team. This is a highly visible role leading legal strategy and governance across the organization and its broader network, with responsibility for advising on complex legal, regulatory, policy, and reputational matters.
The General Counsel will oversee litigation, investigations, corporate governance, compliance, contracts, and legal operations. They will also help shape organizational strategy at the highest levels, partnering closely with senior leaders in a mission-driven, values-oriented environment to support long-term priorities for public education.
The ideal candidate has a strong track record handling high-stakes legal matters in rigorous, high-performance settings and is expected to bring significant litigation experience. Expertise is required across areas such as employment law, education law, compliance, corporate governance, and matters relevant to nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations, along with general corporate responsibilities. The role calls for exceptional judgment, executive presence, and the ability to navigate ambiguity while influencing senior stakeholders and boards; experience leading legal functions at scale in-house or in comparably complex environments is strongly preferred, and a deep commitment to educational opportunity and equity is essential.
