Description

The client, a pivotal institution in the UK financial landscape, is seeking an accomplished General Counsel to head its Legal Directorate. This executive role requires crafting legal strategies that influence regulatory, policy-making, and operational sectors integral to the UK's economic fortitude. As the chief legal adviser, the successful candidate will mentor a team of approximately 200 legal professionals and address both domestic and international legal challenges that could impact the clients core functions. The General Counsel will be pivotal in advising the Governor and senior leadership on intricate financial regulation, public law, and risk management, as well as representing the client in significant legal affairs, such as litigation and legislative reforms.

Candidates are expected to possess a robust legal background with qualifications as a solicitor or barrister, bringing extensive experience in financial regulation and public law. Strong leadership skills are crucial, especially in overseeing substantial legal teams and enacting organizational transformation. The role demands exceptional judgment in managing legal and reputational risks, with requirements for an influential presence in stakeholder relationships, both within the government and on an international level. A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as continuous innovation and improvement within the legal division, is essential.

The role offers an attractive remuneration package including a career-average pension scheme, performance-based awards, and numerous flexible benefits to enhance work-life balance. The successful candidate will enjoy private medical insurance and flexible working arrangements, including opportunities for remote work. Employment in this senior position, however, is contingent upon successful completion of the National Security Vetting process, which can take several weeks, and other required security checks. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute strategically to the financial stability and economic future of the UK.
