The client, a leader in the animal protection movement, is seeking a General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer to join their team. The client, formerly known as Humane Society International and the Humane Society of the United States, works to tackle the root causes of animal cruelty and suffering to create a better world for animals globally. The General Counsel will be responsible for overseeing all legal activities and functions to ensure the client's legal posture is developed and maintained. They will provide guidance to officers and directors on minimizing risks and maximizing impact through the application of legal principles.
The General Counsel will work closely with all departments to develop and modify policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal requirements at the federal, state, and local levels. They will provide leadership and strategic direction for the counsel, representation, and overall management of the client's legal affairs affecting governance, programs, activities, and employees. The role will report to the President & Chief Executive Officer and will be based in the DC Metro Area, with remote work options available. The client envisions a world where animals are protected from cruelty and abuse, and the General Counsel will play a key role in advancing this mission through legal advocacy and support.
In addition to providing legal counsel and advice, the General Counsel will establish the legal services required by the client to ensure protection from any legal action. They will work to build bridges and allies through grants, training, partnerships, and events to help change animals' lives. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in legal leadership, with experience in compliance, governance, and risk management. They will be passionate about animal welfare and committed to driving permanent change to create a better world for all animals.
