Description

The client is seeking a Financial Controller to oversee and manage the organization’s financial operations. Reporting to the Director of Operations, this role is responsible for maintaining the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial information and providing reliable financial insights to support effective financial management across the organization and its program teams.

Key responsibilities include overseeing accounting operations such as the general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and financial reporting; supervising and supporting the finance team to ensure accuracy and timeliness; leading monthly and annual financial close processes; strengthening financial processes, systems, and internal controls; and driving continuous improvement and standardization across financial operations. The role also prepares accurate and timely financial reports aligned with funding and reporting requirements, supports quarterly financial statements and reporting packages, coordinates the annual budgeting process, monitors financial performance and variances, maintains the chart of accounts, and coordinates the annual audit process as the primary point of contact for external auditors.

The Financial Controller will also manage cash flow and liquidity, track reserves and investments in accordance with organizational policies, ensure controls for cash handling and banking authority, and maintain relationships with relevant financial institutions. Additional responsibilities include ensuring compliance with regulatory, legal, and funding requirements (including charitable reporting and tax filing obligations), maintaining accurate financial records and retention practices, identifying financial risks and supporting mitigation strategies, and ensuring adherence to applicable accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field and a professional accounting designation (CPA) required or near completion, along with at least seven years of progressively responsible finance and accounting experience with supervisory experience; experience in not-for-profit or government-funded environments is an asset.
