The client is seeking an Executive Director to serve as the organization’s strategic leader and external representative. The role supports financial sustainability, member engagement, and strategic positioning within a changing scientific publishing and convening environment. The Executive Director will partner closely with the Board of Directors and the organization’s President, serving as the chief staff officer with direct oversight of staff, partnerships, programs, and activities, and with responsibility for prudent financial management.
The Executive Director will support governance by aligning and regularly evaluating organizational structure, success metrics, and progress toward governance objectives; providing management and vision to sustain the organization and its programs; attending and reporting at Board and society business meetings; assisting with onboarding new Board members; and ensuring adherence to governing bylaws and operating policies. The role also includes leading and assessing staff and business partnerships to maintain high standards of accountability, collaboration, inclusivity, diversity, and teamwork, and serving as the primary contact with legal counsel.
Core responsibilities also include leading the organization’s publications and associated publishing operations, acting as a primary daily contact for editors, guiding journal policy implementation, spearheading new initiatives, and managing relationships with publishing partners. The role will negotiate and review publishing contracts and related amendments, oversee annual review of subscription and APC pricing, develop revenue projections and annual operating budget projections for publications, monitor publishing metrics to ensure portfolio viability, and make strategic recommendations as needed. The Executive Director will research and synthesize trends in publishing, data management, and their implications for the organization and its members, support the publications committee including coordinating editor searches, and develop strategies for membership recruitment, retention, growth, and broadening participation.
