The Director of Science position at Environment Canterbury is a senior leadership role responsible for leading a team of 120 staff and overseeing science-informed functions across the organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of South Island science and ensuring that all work is evidence-based, future-focused, and aligned with organizational values and long-term commitments. This individual will also be tasked with championing the integration of science into council-wide activities and collaborating closely with Ngai Tahu, partner agencies, and environmental leaders in Waitaha to address complex environmental, regulatory, and community challenges.The ideal candidate for this role will possess strong strategic and people-centered leadership skills, as well as a deep understanding of environmental science and its applications in a regulatory context. They will be responsible for shaping the organizational culture, transforming systems, and guiding the organization through a period of transition following the retirement of the previous Director of Science.
