The client is seeking a Director of Practice Improvement to lead, develop, and empower a high-performing team of project management professionals. In a matrixed structure, Project Directors guide day-to-day project work while the Director focuses on people leadership, coaching team members’ growth, helping them navigate challenges, and creating an environment where they can thrive. The role will use an adaptive leadership approach to build trust, buy-in, and strong relationships within a highly collaborative team.
The Director of Practice Improvement will oversee a team of approximately 8–12 employees and provide regular 1:1 supervision focused on feedback, performance, and professional development. Responsibilities include setting and tracking team goals, timelines, and deliverables; aligning team priorities with organizational and departmental strategic goals; and participating in performance ratings and recommendations related to merit increases. The role may also extend to coaching senior managers in their supervisory practice, modeling effective supervision, and strengthening their confidence and capability as people leaders.
Key responsibilities also include establishing clear performance expectations and SMART goals aligned with organizational values and mission, conducting performance reviews, and providing timely, constructive feedback. The Director will identify and address performance concerns with care, develop action plans, and support performance improvement when needed. The role will drive staff development through professional support and learning opportunities, recognize achievements to motivate the team, and foster an inclusive, supportive culture that prioritizes well-being and work-life balance, while facilitating mentorship and best-practice sharing and managing conflict effectively. Additionally, the Director will help build a more formal and consistent people-management infrastructure for the department, including monitoring and managing performance and measuring results.
