Description

The client is seeking a Director of Public Works to provide strategic and operational leadership for its Public Works Department. The role will serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, leading a diverse group of employees and fostering a culture centered on accountability, safety, collaboration, and customer service while ensuring efficient, effective departmental operations in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.

The Director will play a central role in planning and executing capital projects, developing operational standards and processes, managing departmental budgets, and supporting long-term infrastructure planning initiatives. Responsibilities include leading occupational health and safety, workforce development, and continuous improvement efforts that support service excellence across the municipality, with oversight of municipal roads, water and wastewater systems, and solid waste management.

Key responsibilities include leading safe, efficient, and compliant delivery of public works operations and municipal infrastructure services; managing and developing staff performance and team effectiveness; overseeing construction projects, contractors, and consultants, including review of engineering documentation and supporting subdivision development sign-offs and permits; developing and monitoring asset management plans and quality management practices; preparing budgets and supporting financial reporting; and preparing reports, recommendations, and technical presentations, including attendance at Council meetings as required. The role is expected to maintain regulatory certifications, training, and operational compliance standards, and to support special projects and operational improvements as needed. The preferred candidate will have collaborative, solutions-oriented municipal or infrastructure leadership experience, strong balancing of strategic planning with day-to-day oversight, demonstrated leadership and communication skills, knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations, and relevant experience in infrastructure projects, operational planning, budgets, and regulatory compliance, with public sector or municipal government experience considered an asset.
