Description

The client is seeking an exceptional Director of Public Health, Wellbeing and Communities to lead a wide-ranging, system-level public health and prevention agenda across neighbourhoods. This statutory role brings together public health leadership with a broader portfolio that includes neighbourhood and community services, domestic abuse reduction, sports services, environmental health, and community safety and resilience, with a focus on improving health and wellbeing outcomes at scale and addressing the complex determinants of poor health and inequality.

As a member of the council’s Corporate Leadership Board, the Director will shape strategic direction and provide collective leadership across the organisation. The role will require influencing at the highest level locally, regionally, and nationally, working with city partners to drive a place-based approach to prevention, tackling persistent inequality, and ensuring public health insight informs strategic decisions across the whole council and wider system. The Director will need strong corporate and systems leadership to work effectively with elected members in a cross-council committee system, navigate complexity, and deliver measurable improvements focused on outcomes for residents.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced senior leader with statutory and professional public health expertise and a credible track record of leading through influence, delivering through partnerships, and translating ambition into tangible improvements in population health, wellbeing, and opportunity. The role is a statutory Director of Public Health post and is jointly appointed; candidates must be on the GMC Specialist Register (Public Health Medicine) with a licence to practise, the GDC Specialist List, or the UK Public Health Register at specialist level. Membership of FPH by examination, exemption, assessment, or equivalent is required, and selection will be conducted by an Advisory Appointments Committee in line with relevant joint guidance.
