Description

The client seeks a Director of Policy and Democratic Governance to lead work within its Place, Policy, and Power (PPP) department. PPP’s policy approach aims to strengthen a just, multiracial democracy through a whole-of-government strategy that defends, strengthens, and expands equity-centered policy and practice across local, state, and federal levels. The director will help build durable narratives about the power and responsibility of government in delivering fair and just outcomes, bridging organizing and policy strategies across sectors and governance scales.

Reporting to the Vice President of Place, Policy, and Power, the Director of Policy and Democratic Governance leads community-rooted, government-facing, and nationally resonant policy development efforts. This role supports policy development and advocacy by identifying emerging policy issues and best practices, and by connecting local and state innovation to national policy dialogues. The director is expected to align and advance policy development through partnerships and coalition work, helping translate movement-informed priorities into practical engagement with governance systems.

Key responsibilities include advancing whole-of-government racial equity policy strategy and development; partnering with local leaders and government officials to expand fair and just outcomes while growing collective power to govern; tracking and synthesizing emerging policy issues across multiple sectors; and supporting narrative and messaging strategies that reinforce government’s role in defending and expanding a just, multiracial democracy. The director will also build and maintain movement and government partnerships, provide technical assistance and policy expertise, convene peer learning spaces, represent the client at national forums and coalitions, use data to strengthen governing power, and collaborate on research outputs such as reports, briefs, and narrative tools. Additionally, the role will support strategic planning with the Vice President, lead cross-departmental projects integrating policy with narrative and government practice, and manage multiple initiatives to meet priorities.
