the client is seeking a Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead a high-impact mechanical engineering team for complex building system projects from concept through construction support. This visible leadership role focuses on shaping people, process, and technical excellence while helping strengthen department performance, elevate design quality, and influence how projects are delivered across a growing portfolio.
Responsibilities include guiding the mechanical engineering function; developing staffing plans, mentoring, and performance expectations for a growing team of design professionals; reviewing HVAC and plumbing deliverables for technical soundness, coordination quality, and code alignment; and building practical standards for QA, documentation, and repeatable project execution. The director will also partner with leadership on forecasting, resource balancing, and department priorities, and serve as a senior technical advisor on system selection, constructability, and client-facing problem solving.
The role calls for a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline, along with eight or more years of experience in mechanical building systems design. A Professional Engineer license is required, with a California license preferred or the ability to secure reciprocity. The ideal candidate will demonstrate success leading teams and department-level initiatives, possess strong working knowledge of HVAC and plumbing systems and applicable building codes and industry standards, and have strong communication skills to lead both technically and operationally while supporting proposals, scoping, and relationship development with owners, architects, and internal partners.
