The client seeks a Director of Galleries to lead the client’s gallery exhibition program and help shape the visual arts experience in the Cultural District. Reporting to the Chief Programming and Engagement Officer, the Director develops and advances a curatorial vision, oversees exhibitions and related public programming, and builds strong relationships with artists, curators, cultural partners, and audiences. The role provides strategic and day-to-day leadership for the Visual Arts team and helps ensure the galleries are vibrant, accessible, and well-managed spaces that reflect artistic diversity, community engagement, and the client’s mission.
The Director provides leadership across exhibition strategy, gallery operations, and team management, including supervision of staff and coordination with contractors and volunteers. Responsibilities include managing budgets and gallery operations; coordinating exhibition planning, loans, collections guidelines, and related administrative needs; and supporting internal and external stakeholder collaboration. The role includes strong working knowledge of installation and exhibition best practices, familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, and demonstrated ability to manage expectations through excellent oral and written communication. Education in a relevant field (e.g., MA-level study in art history, curatorial studies, museum studies/management or equivalent experience) is required, along with relevant professional experience and management experience appropriate to the seniority of the position.
Key program responsibilities include developing a multi-year strategy for gallery exhibitions and visual arts programming; overseeing the overall gallery exhibition program, including trust-curated exhibitions and selected guest-curated or partner opportunities; and curating approximately 2–3 exhibitions per year. The Director also leads public-facing programming tied to exhibitions, oversees a signature gallery-focused community event (including coordination and post-event evaluation), and may contribute writing for exhibitions and press/publications. Additional duties include collaborating with communications and marketing on audience development and press strategies, supporting donor and sponsor engagement through exhibition and artist events, negotiating and managing relationships with artists and visiting professionals, and overseeing maintenance and planning related to public art installed throughout the Cultural District.
