The client is seeking a Director of Galleries to lead a gallery exhibition program and help shape the visual arts experience within its cultural district. Reporting to the Chief Programming and Engagement Officer, the Director develops and advances a curatorial vision for the gallery spaces, oversees exhibitions and related public programming, and builds strong relationships with artists, curators, cultural partners, and audiences. The role provides both strategic and day-to-day leadership for the Visual Arts team, supporting vibrant, accessible, and well-managed gallery environments that reflect artistic diversity, excellence, and community engagement.
The Director is responsible for artistic leadership and program strategy, including developing a multi-year approach for visual arts programming and gallery exhibitions. The position oversees the overall exhibition program, such as Trust-curated exhibitions, guest curators, commissions, partner projects, touring exhibitions, and community-based opportunities, and curates approximately 2–3 exhibitions per year while leading selections for guest curators, commissions, partners, and artists as applicable. The Director also oversees connected public programming (e.g., receptions, talks, tours, and engagement opportunities) and manages a signature Visual Arts event, including coordination, internal planning, and post-event evaluation, while contributing written materials for exhibitions and serving as a voice to press and publications when needed.
The role includes external affairs and engagement through collaboration with communications and marketing teams on marketing, press, and audience development strategies, as well as relationship building with an established network of colleagues locally and worldwide. The Director supports donor, sponsor, board, and patron engagement through exhibition and artist events and related cultivation activities, and negotiates and manages relationships with artists, visiting curators, vendors, service providers, and arts organizations. Additional responsibilities cover public art oversight across the district, collections planning and guidelines, budget creation and expense supervision, hiring and supervising Visual Arts staff and contractors, managing exhibition agreements and artwork loans with related documentation (including insurance, condition reports, shipping, installation, de-installation, and records), participating in facilities management and capital project oversight for gallery spaces, and demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion through continuous development and proactive bias management.
