The client is seeking a Director of Finance to lead financial strategy and operations in Halifax, NS. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer, and with accountability to the Treasurer of the Board of Directors, this role manages all financial matters and provides strategic advice and analysis to support the development of fiscal and operational plans within a not-for-profit charitable environment with a unionized model and multiple funding sources, along with their associated reporting and auditing requirements.
Responsibilities include participating on the Executive and Management Teams to support annual business planning, strategic planning, and corporate initiatives, and ensuring organizational vision is translated into short- and long-term goals connected to staff execution. The Director of Finance will help identify and implement financial-related strategies, policies, programs, and standards that support operational success and strengthen the ability to attract and retain quality employees, while coaching and mentoring both finance and nonfinancial managers to build an effective, team-based approach to finance.
The role will establish and support annual operating and capital budget processes, work with the Board and leadership teams to support board governance activities (including Finance, Audit and Risk Committee support through the Board Treasurer), and ensure timely submission of required reports and forms. Key duties also include maintaining accounting records (including payroll), preparing regular financial statements and reports to the Board and funders, ensuring annual audit preparation and compliance, identifying cost-saving opportunities, reviewing and recommending improvements to business processes, and overseeing the accounting and finance team. The ideal candidate will hold a CPA designation and have at least 5 years of related experience; proficiency with Microsoft Office is required, and experience with Financial Edge NXT is considered an asset.
