As The client, we are seeking a Director of Economic Growth to help deliver a next phase of economic development. The role will focus on turning plans into visible results for residents, businesses, and communities, in an environment where successful execution is expected to convert investment into jobs, homes, and opportunity. The post is politically restricted and will require occasional attendance at evening or weekend events, Council meetings, and participation in emergency response arrangements.
As Director of Economic Growth, you will lead a broad portfolio that spans economic growth, property and development, transport, planning, and green futures and sustainability. You will drive major regeneration, infrastructure, and development programmes from initial concept through to completion, act as the senior lead for inward investment by building compelling propositions and securing resources for long-term growth, and oversee the Council’s commercial property portfolio with a focus on balancing income, risk, and asset performance alongside wider place-making benefits. You will ensure planning, transport, and sustainability services enable growth and quality development while maintaining statutory and governance standards.
You will represent the region and help lead engagement nationally with relevant stakeholders, including investors and higher-education partners, and work closely with elected Members, developers, and collaborators to position the city to capture opportunities in a competitive and changing funding landscape. The appointment will be assessed on outcomes such as what gets built, funded, and finished, rather than on strategy production. The role is expected to provide senior leadership across the organization, reporting directly to the Chief Executive and working as part of the Corporate Leadership Team, and you will bring a proven track record of delivering growth, investment, regeneration, and change.
