Description

the client invites applications and nominations for the Dean of Memorial Chapel (Dean). In this newly established position, the Dean will support the diverse spiritual, religious, and pastoral needs of the university community while nurturing religious and spiritual traditions. The Dean is expected to set a vision for how religious and spiritual life can create a vibrant community across faith and non-faith traditions.

the Dean will lead the Office of the University Chaplains, which serves as a hub for campus support, spiritual exploration, community connection, and reflective conversations. The role includes providing interfaith engagement and collaboration with chaplains, student leaders, and faculty and staff. Through the office, students, faculty, and staff may gain insights into the values and practices of multiple traditions, including spiritual practices and secular reflections, with opportunities for dialogue and understanding that may extend to the local community.

the Dean will provide leadership and vision for the university’s diverse religious and spiritual life, reporting directly to the President. The role requires strong administrative and management capabilities to guide the office’s operations and strategy, along with collaboration across campus and with off-campus partners to support the religious and spiritual development of students, staff, and faculty. The ideal candidate will hold an accredited Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or comparable training with at least six years of full-time religious leadership experience, with a strong preference for a terminal academic or professional degree and higher education leadership experience; they will also bring supervisory experience, strong communication and public speaking/oratory skills, the ability to build community and foster collaboration across diverse constituencies, an appreciation for multifaith understanding, and the ability to lead with equanimity, discretion, and integrity. the Dean role is not permanently aligned with a single religious tradition, and the current staffing configuration may create an opportunity for the Dean to also occupy a role as a Christian or Jewish Chaplain.
