The client is seeking a Commissioning Director to lead and support teams responsible for ensuring building systems are designed, installed, and operated in alignment with the owner’s operational requirements and the engineer’s design intent. The role involves regular collaboration with owners, their representatives, contractors, engineers, and architects, and includes leading and participating in commissioning activities across all projects.
Key responsibilities include mentoring and developing commissioning professionals, establishing performance standards, evaluating team performance, and managing project information to support accurate execution by commissioning agents and technicians. The director will implement processes for status tracking and reporting to clients and stakeholders, ensure communications are documented and properly executed, identify scope or performance gaps, and drive corrective actions. The role also includes developing and negotiating fee proposals (including labor-hour estimates), overseeing KPIs and project performance metrics, providing input on commissioning standards and best practices, supporting business development efforts such as client interviews and opportunity pursuit, and managing commissioning budgets while assessing project feasibility and profitability prior to approval.
Requirements include a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field and 8+ years of commissioning or related building construction experience, including mechanical, plumbing, and automatic temperature control systems with testing, adjusting, and balancing. The director should have comprehensive knowledge of building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, controls, and building enclosure), strong leadership and employee development skills, excellent verbal and written communication, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Certification in commissioning (e.g., NEBB, ACG, BCxA, ASHRAE, etc.) and proficiency with cloud-based commissioning software platforms are expected, along with professional interaction skills and the ability to lead and build collaborative relationships. Preferred qualifications include EI certification or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure and leadership experience, with travel of approximately 25%–40% to project sites or office locations, and physical capability to perform site-related activities such as climbing ladders and moving moderate loads.
