Description

the client is seeking a highly skilled Claims Attorney and Associate Counsel for a full-time, in-office role focused on maritime law and workers’ compensation. In this position, you will help shape legal strategy and provide enterprise-wide claims oversight while working closely with claims leadership and executive stakeholders.

You will provide strategic legal guidance on complex, high-severity workers’ compensation and maritime claims that involve state and federal jurisdictional issues. Responsibilities will include advising on claim denials, reservations of rights, settlements, mediations, and appeals; determining and communicating coverage positions for Longshore and workers’ compensation and related maritime employer liability matters; and issuing/reviewing coverage position letters addressing jurisdictional conflicts and maritime employment status. You will also monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting the business and lead litigation strategy for claims and related corporate matters.

Required qualifications include a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one eligible U.S. jurisdiction under Connecticut’s in-house counsel regulations, along with 7+ years of progressive legal experience with substantial exposure to Longshore and state workers’ compensation matters. You should have strong insurance coverage analysis experience and a demonstrated ability to manage litigation while engaging with regulatory agencies; prior experience as Claims Counsel or Claims Attorney at an insurance company or law firm is expected, with commercial claims experience as a preference. Deep knowledge of the LHWCA and related maritime jurisprudence, along with the ability to translate complex legal issues into clear guidance for business stakeholders, is also expected.
