The client is inviting applications for an unpaid voluntary Board of Directors Trustee role for a three-year term, with the opportunity for re-election for a second three-year term. The position is designed for individuals with senior-level experience working within the civil service and will contribute to the organisation’s governance and strategic direction. The role involves providing strategic insight on how the organisation engages with government departments and supporting ongoing relationship-building across relevant public sector stakeholders.
Core responsibilities include providing efficient and effective leadership, upholding The client’s vision, mission, values, and objectives, and ensuring the organisation meets statutory and governance obligations as set out in the Board Handbook. Trustees will engage in matters reserved for major board decision-making, including strategic planning, annual work planning, and budget oversight; promote prudent management of organisational resources; ensure appropriate strategies and policies are in place to support volunteering objectives; and develop and monitor risk management approaches. Trustees are also expected to act with integrity, formally register conflicts of interest, avoid accepting gifts in their board capacity, and actively promote the organisation’s reputation.
Civil service-focused duties include providing general expertise and advice on engagement with the civil service, ensuring the importance of that engagement is reflected in board discussions, and acting as a mentor and sounding board for public affairs and advocacy leadership. The role is particularly suitable for candidates who have retired from the civil service and wish to continue making a meaningful contribution, while remaining open to those still in work. The successful candidate will have a successful track record at a senior civil service level, with governance experience covering strategic planning, organisational performance management, and service development; political astuteness; strong communication and interpersonal skills; and the ability to challenge constructively and support collective decisions.
