The Chief Operating Officer (COO) leads and oversees a physician-led medical group that serves hospitals and clinics. Working directly with senior leadership, the COO supports strategic leadership, day-to-day administration, and operational oversight across physician group operations and related business lines, ensuring adherence to established goals and delivery of high-quality, patient-centered, efficient healthcare services.
The COO participates in multi-year strategic planning, translating organizational objectives into departmental strategies and actionable plans. Responsibilities include supporting clinical network and service line integration with relevant stakeholders, evaluating growth opportunities through merger, acquisition, or partnership models, establishing performance metrics and KPIs, developing and managing operational budgets, and driving operational excellence and efficiency across clinical and administrative functions to enhance patient flow and service delivery.
The COO fosters continuous improvement and innovation, streamlines operations to improve data utilization and patient care/accessibility, and builds strong relationships with physician leaders and staff to optimize care pathways and experiences. The role also involves recruiting, developing, and retaining operational talent; creating and implementing key policies and procedures; ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and quality standards; leading operational consistency across multiple regions while recognizing regional nuances; and staying current on emerging trends and care models, with a strong emphasis on enterprise-first thinking and strategic influence.
