Description

The client is seeking a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), a senior executive responsible for the strategic direction, clinical quality, and operational oversight of all nursing services. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CNO serves as the primary advocate for nursing practice and is accountable for establishing and maintaining the highest standards of patient care, providing visionary leadership to promote clinical excellence, compassion, and continuous improvement across a broad nursing portfolio.

The CNO will lead nursing operations and drive measurable improvements in quality, patient outcomes, and patient experience. Responsibilities include executive oversight of nursing operations, financial resources, workforce planning and staffing, care coordination, clinical technology, and regulatory compliance, with additional accountability for nursing education, nursing quality, safety, and related compliance activities. The role also advances nursing excellence by fostering a professional practice environment and shared governance grounded in evidence-based care, clinical inquiry, patient and family engagement, ethical practice, and a culture of safety and accountability.

The CNO is expected to build and sustain an engaged nursing workforce through recruitment, retention, leadership development, succession planning, career pathways, education, competency management, and mentorship, while promoting research, innovation, and continuous professional growth. Collaboration with academic partners supports nursing practice and education through student clinical placements, resident collaboration, and other initiatives that develop future healthcare professionals. The role is typically held by leaders with at least 10 years of executive nursing leadership experience, including 5–7 years in a CNO-level position within a complex hospital setting; experience in an academic medical center or teaching hospital is highly preferred. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.
