the client is a registered charity supporting older people and aiming to alleviate loneliness and social isolation through its befriending service, social clubs and outings, and transport to activities. It also assists older people with personal safety through an alert scheme that helps support them in their own homes. the client is seeking to recruit a general trustee to the board of directors, ideally with a background in management and an interest in older people’s services. Trustees may be willing in future to take on the role of chairperson, and those interested in joining a management sub-committee are particularly welcome.
As a charity trustee, you will comply with the charity’s governing document, ensure the charity is aligned with its charitable purpose for the public benefit, act in the best interests of the charity, and exercise reasonable care and skill. Responsibilities include providing input to strategic direction, contributing to policy development and implementation as required, and actively participating in board discussions and decision-making. You will also be expected to uphold the highest standards of corporate governance.
Key skills and qualities include an appreciation and knowledge of the not-for-profit sector, and an understanding of and commitment to the charity’s mission and values. The board typically meets 2–3 times per year for trustees; trustees who join the management sub-committee may participate in additional sub-committee meetings (around ten per year). Meetings are held at a local parish office in Barna, County Galway, so living locally is an advantage.
