The client is seeking a Chairperson with a strategic remit to represent the organization’s vision and purpose. The Chairperson will ensure the management committee functions properly by planning and running meetings in line with the governing document, promoting full participation, and ensuring that relevant matters are discussed so that effective decisions are made and carried out. The role will also support orderly, efficient handling of business, bring impartiality and objectivity to meetings and decision-making, and facilitate change while addressing conflict at board level.
In addition, the Chairperson will review governance performance and committee skills, and plan for recruitment and renewal of the management committee. The Chairperson will liaise with the chief officer as appropriate to maintain an overview of organizational affairs, coordinate the committee so that responsibilities for key aspects of management (such as personnel matters and financial control) are met, and ensure specialist expertise is engaged where needed. The Chairperson will also work to facilitate change and address conflict across the organization in coordination with the chief officer.
The Chairperson will provide support and supervision to senior staff, including direct line management of the senior staff member of the organization, and will sit on appointment panels and final appeal grievance panels as appropriate. The role requires strong leadership, effective communication and interpersonal skills, impartiality and fairness with respect for confidentiality, and the ability to ensure decisions are followed up. The successful candidate will demonstrate good time-keeping, tact and diplomacy, an understanding of management committee roles and responsibilities, experience of organizational and people management, and knowledge of the operating environment for charities in Ireland.
