Description

The client is seeking a Board Director who will also serve as Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee. The Board role is focused on collaborative governance, providing insight and oversight alongside fellow Directors and the executive team. The client supports people affected by the criminal justice system to move forward with dignity and purpose, contributing to housing, education, training, employment, and wider support.

As Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee, the client’s Director will advise and guide the Board on financial matters and help evaluate and monitor the adequacy of finance and governance policies and procedures to ensure compliance with best practice. The role also includes ambassadorial responsibilities to support stakeholder engagement where appropriate, and the ability to offer expert guidance to the Board and management. The Chair is expected to contribute to governance that promotes transparency, accountability, and safeguarding of public funds.

Candidates are expected to have a qualified accounting background, with chair experience being advantageous. The role typically requires technical understanding of audit, risk management, internal controls, and financial reporting in a charity context, along with familiarity with accounting standards, audit practices, and assurance frameworks. Knowledge of relevant charity law, financial regulations, and funder compliance requirements is required, as well as awareness of fraud, corruption, whistleblowing frameworks, and value-for-money principles; experience overseeing external and/or internal audit functions and reviewing or strengthening internal control and risk management processes is also expected, alongside high ethical standards, strong communication skills, analytical judgement, and a willingness to devote the necessary time to the role.
