Description

The client is seeking an accomplished, forward-thinking chair to lead the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry. This is a leadership and education-focused role with responsibility for advancing clinical, educational, research, and community-facing missions, with an emphasis on improving health care delivery for rural and resource-constrained communities. the chair will champion innovation, technology, and systems-based thinking to support new models of care aligned with the needs of diverse Appalachian populations.

key responsibilities include providing strategic leadership and administrative oversight, including departmental operations, budgeting and resource allocation, policy implementation, and ensuring regulatory compliance and accreditation standards. the chair will provide clinical oversight for high-quality, evidence-based behavioral health services, with goals of expanding access to care, improving patient outcomes, and integrating behavioral health within broader health care systems. the role also includes academic leadership to support and enhance educational programs such as medical student education, residency and fellowship training, and continuing professional development, promoting innovative teaching methods while maintaining accreditation requirements.

the chair will foster research and scholarship by supporting a culture of inquiry, encouraging grant funding, publications, and interdisciplinary collaboration in behavioral health and psychiatric research. additional responsibilities include recruiting, retaining, and developing a diverse, high-performing faculty; providing mentorship; overseeing departmental promotion processes; and supporting professional growth and leadership development. the chair will build partnerships within the institution and broader community to address behavioral health needs and advocate for mental health awareness and resources. candidate qualifications include an MD, DO, or foreign equivalent/terminal degree in psychology or a related field; board certification in psychiatry for physicians; ability to obtain a state medical license in West Virginia; and academic rank of associate professor or professor, or eligibility for appointment at that rank. demonstrated leadership experience in academic and clinical settings, along with a strong record of clinical excellence, teaching, and scholarly achievement, are required.
