The client is seeking an accomplished, forward-thinking Chairperson for the Department of Surgery. This role will lead a distinguished department, grow surgical programs, and expand access to care across Central New York now and into the future.
Key responsibilities include building trusted relationships with department faculty, the Dean, and client leadership through open communication, active listening, and fair decision-making with clear responsiveness and follow-through. The Chair will partner with faculty and practice leadership to identify and pursue near- and long-term opportunities to improve patient access and increase ambulatory and surgical volume, while driving operational improvements that enhance team performance, patient experience, referring physician satisfaction, faculty engagement, and overall financial performance. The role also includes establishing visibility and dialogue with clinical colleagues across Central New York with emphasis on referring physicians by understanding referral patterns and relationships and identifying opportunities for improved coordination and collaboration.
The Chair will optimize faculty recruitment, retention, mentorship, and development to support academic growth, and will work with education specialists and department faculty, residents, and staff to educate students, residents, and fellows while creating a positive learning environment. Additional responsibilities include collaborating with university leadership and faculty to advance scientific knowledge and support success in competing for external funding, along with demonstrating scholarly and professional achievement appropriate for academic rank. Preferred qualifications include an MD, DO, or equivalent; board certification in surgery or eligibility for licensure in New York; a continuing appointment in the Department of Surgery; eight to ten years of related experience in a complex academic medical center; proven leadership and collaboration skills across faculty and administration; strong clinical expertise; and academic experience with contributions to UME and GME.
