Description

the client seeks an accomplished and visionary cardiothoracic (CT) surgeon to serve as the inaugural Chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the client’s medical school. This role will provide academic leadership for cardiothoracic surgery, with responsibility for setting the strategic direction of education, faculty development, research, and scholarly activity. The Chair will build the department’s academic framework and work to elevate the profile of cardiothoracic surgery within the school of medicine.

In partnership with the client’s health system, the role will also support unifying clinical governance for cardiac, vascular, and thoracic services across a multi-hospital academic health system serving central Appalachia. As a clinical leader, the Chair will advance high-quality, patient-centered care, drive program growth and innovation, and foster multidisciplinary collaboration across the health system’s facilities. The position is intended to shape the future of cardiothoracic care, education, and discovery by strengthening access to advanced cardiovascular and thoracic services for the communities served.

The successful candidate will be a distinguished surgeon-leader committed to integrating clinical excellence with academic advancement. Qualifications include an MD or equivalent from an accredited institution, eligibility for medical licensure in West Virginia, board certification and fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery, and a record of clinical excellence, programmatic leadership, and academic contributions. The role also expects demonstrated leadership in faculty and student mentorship, strategic planning, and organizational development, along with experience that may include fiscal management, academic program oversight, and a track record of faculty recruitment and retention, supported by strong interpersonal, communication, and team-building skills.
