"One of the critical issues that we have to confront is illegal immigration, because this is a multi-headed Hydra that affects our economy, our health care, our education systems, our national security, and also our local criminality." Allen West, American Politician
The Australian Economy is currently thriving in comparison to the rest of the world. Unsurprisingly then, there has been a surge in immigration in past months, regardless of a dip in Australia’s job market.
News.com reports that the highest influx of migrants to Australia are from New Zealand, with over 30,000. Interestingly, the next largest incursions are from China and India, making up over 16,000 immigrants to Australia from China and over 15,000 from India. Shockingly the region of Victoria in Australia reported a decrease in the employment rate by 5.5% within the same year.
Equally, many Executive Search Firms in Australia have reported a decrease in assignments this year in certain industries. For instance, the retail industry has been hit hard recently. In the same way, the financial services sector has been hit hard once again this year.
Overall, what appears interesting about this information is that, we are aware that Australia is an attractive relocation destination for expatriates from the United Kingdom, as is China. However, we also know from previous reports that migration levels to and from India are low, and it is interesting that Australia is seemingly one of the top destinations for professionals from this country to relocate to at the moment.
Moreover, it will be interesting to see if the increase in immigration in Australia has any effect on the Australian economy or the job market within the coming eighteen months of so. It seems likely that with the increased immigration bares some correlation with the decrease in the employment rate within the region, but not necessarily with executive level positions.
