Quckly improve your LinkedIn profile with 5 key tips from Louise Kursmark, Director of BlueSteps Executive Career Services (BECS), for anyone wishing to leverage the power of their LinkedIn profile:
1) Ensure that your profile is rich with ‘key’ words. When recruiters use LinkedIn to search for prospective candidates they use ‘key word’ searches. If the right words are not in your profile then you are unlikely to be noticed.
2) Be certain to highlight information beyond what is on your resume. Listing publications, associations, public speaking, honours, languages etc are key ways to showcase information that is unique and distinctive – something that will set you apart from the competition.
3) Use the appropriate voice and tone in your LinkedIn profile. Online profiles are less formal than resumes, so for example, avoid using the 3rd person – it is off putting and counterproductive to building a personalized social network.
4) Your ‘headline’ is a 120 character section that is displayed underneath your name. It’s a key area that defines who you are, the level you have attained/aspire to, industry preferences (if applicable) and your brand or positioning statement. The aim here is to simply define who you are whilst creating the perception that you are at a senior level within your industry. If your job title does this by itself, then this can remain as your headline.
5) LinkedIn is the no 1 professional networking website in the world, with over 60 million users. On average someone joins every second. This site should be crucial not just for job seekers but also for anyone that’s actively managing their career.
