Description

The client is seeking a qualified Assistant Director of Transportation. Under general direction, this role provides technical and professional assistance to the Director of Transportation in managing, planning, and organizing transportation operations and staff. This is an unrepresented, at-will position focused on supporting the effectiveness of district transportation programs and service delivery.

Key responsibilities include assisting with the implementation and evaluation of transportation projects and programs, including on-time performance and safety initiatives; serving as Director of Transportation on a temporary basis when needed; implementing and managing new departmental technology (including dispatch and vehicle location systems, if applicable) and overseeing staff training; coordinating with transportation, maintenance, and planning managers to ensure effective operational processes; and providing leadership through coaching, performance feedback, goal-setting, and handling personnel actions as required.

The role also supports the development and implementation of service goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work plans; prepares and presents written and oral reports and analyses on complex transportation delivery issues; participates in labor/management committees and related problem-solving and grievance resolution activities; provides technical direction to managerial and technical staff; assists in preparing and administering the Transportation Department budget; and develops and administers special projects for the Director. Qualifications include an education equivalency at the bachelor’s level in transportation planning, public administration, business administration, or a directly related field, along with experience in transit operations with management-level responsibility. A valid Class C California driver license (or ability to obtain one) is required, along with the ability to meet safe driving standards; the position may require occasional work outside regular business hours based on operational demands and includes passing a criminal background and credit review.
