Description

The client is seeking an Assistant Director of Transportation to support the Director of Transportation in managing, planning, and organizing transportation operations and staff. Under general direction, the role provides technical and professional assistance while helping implement and evaluate transportation projects and programs. The position is an unrepresented at-will classification and will act as the Director of Transportation on a temporary basis when needed.

The assistant director will support transportation service performance, including on-time performance and safety initiatives, and will implement and oversee new departmental technology, such as systems used for dispatch and vehicle tracking, along with staff training. The role collaborates with transportation, maintenance, and planning leaders to support an effective operational process and provides technical direction to managerial, professional, and technical staff involved in transportation services supervision. The assistant director will also contribute to service goal development and the creation and communication of complex reports and analyses to diverse audiences.

Leadership and personnel responsibilities include mentoring and coaching staff, conducting work reviews and evaluations, providing constructive feedback, and assisting with personnel actions as needed, including discipline procedures and recommendations related to staffing decisions. The role participates in labor/management committees and may support grievance resolution and other labor relations problem-solving activities. Minimum qualifications include an education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, along with progressively responsible transit operations experience with management-level experience, and the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class C California driver license that meets safe driving standards; work outside regular business hours and successful criminal background and credit review may be required, and the role will include travel to work sites within or outside the district.
