The client is seeking a collaborative, service-oriented Assistant City Attorney to provide legal counsel and representation in a fast-paced municipal environment. The role will advise elected officials and department heads, support multiple city departments, and help manage legal matters involving municipal ordinance compliance and related litigation.
Responsibilities include prosecuting municipal ordinance violations, conducting legal research, delivering practical legal guidance, and serving as an effective communicator with strong writing and courtroom capabilities. The Assistant City Attorney will work within the City Attorney’s Office, which provides legal support to the City Commission, City Manager, boards and commissions, and all municipal departments, and will report to the City Attorney.
The ideal candidate will have a Juris Doctor degree and at least two years of litigation experience, with experience gained through clinic litigation considered. The candidate must be licensed to practice law in New Mexico (or be able to obtain licensure within one year), maintain a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, and be bondable. Preferred qualifications include municipal law experience, prosecution experience, and experience advising public agencies or governmental entities, along with strong courtroom and public presentation skills.
