The Legislative Counsel and Parliamentary Counsel (LCPC) reports directly to the Clerk of the Senate and is responsible for providing non-partisan legal advice and legislative services to the Senate, its committees, and senators. As a key member of the senior executive team, the LCPC plays a crucial role in setting institutional priorities and ensuring that legal advice is based on sound principles and precedents. The LCPC oversees a team that offers expertise in constitutional, administrative, labor, and parliamentary law, and also serves as general counsel, providing legal direction on administrative matters and representing the Senate in court proceedings to protect parliamentary privileges.

In addition to providing legal counsel, the LCPC is responsible for legislative drafting and parliamentary support, making this role a unique combination of responsibilities. The LCPC's expertise and guidance are essential in ensuring that the Senate operates effectively and in compliance with legal requirements. The successful candidate will have a strong background in legal practice, with experience in constitutional and parliamentary law, as well as excellent communication and leadership skills to effectively collaborate with the senior executive team and provide strategic legal advice to support the Senate's operations.
