UC Davis Health (UCDH) is seeking a Director of Business Planning. The Business Planning Director is responsible for and oversees the development of opportunities, concepts, business cases, and execution plans for departments and business units internal to UCDH through leadership of subordinate managers and staff. This individual will lead a team of business planning professionals and managers to produce market research reports, conduct internal capabilities assessments, provide financial modeling, manage business planning, and progress monitoring for the organization. The Director is also responsible for the management and socialization of the business planning discipline internally, as well as mentoring and training our internal business owners. This position will contribute to overall long-term strategy for business development, new programs and services, and advise senior management as to the implications of such programs. This position will provide guidance to and lead teams, including Executive Management across the organization, in developing the financial, programmatic, and operational long-term strategies for service-line growth to diversify revenue and generate mission sustaining income. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Business Planning Leadership: Coordinates and manages business development team and other executive leaders, through matrix style reporting structure, to organize business planning processes and efforts. This will include, but not limited to, service line expansion, new innovative technologies and services, destination programs, and other opportunities for new and emerging service lines. Facilitates collaboration among members of the health system and other leaders to include management of multiple workstreams, e.g. Finance, Legal, Compliance, Contracts, Ambulatory Care, Hospital Administration, Pharmacy, and others as defined, to advance business concepts and programs that support strategic growth at UCDH. Determines strategies for mission critical programs with organization-wide impact. Provides leadership for business planning for business transformation projects that cross functional, organizational, and management authority boundaries. Serves as a collaborative partner and mentor across the enterprise to identify and vet solutions that enable best-in-class performance and organizational innovation. Ensures business planning and strategies conforms to industry best practices, complies with regulatory requirements, and organizational policies. Resource Management and Supervision: Accountable for planning and coordination of staffing, fiscal, and material resources to achieve objectives for the business planning team and UCDH system. Forecasts staffing for long term planning for both departmental resources and resources at an intraorganizational level that will support long term projects. Defines development plans and core competencies consistent with workforce planning. Collaborates with senior management in developing short and long-range financial plans and annual budgets related to business development recommendations and planning. Develops plans based on in-depth knowledge of hospital and health care services, academic institutions, and physician practices. In a matrixed environment, lead and inspire functional team leaders and external consultants- while new growth opportunities are being evaluated. Oversees management of personnel matters and direct supervision of staff. Analyzes and determines staffing requirements, provides counsel and resource information to professional staff, assigns work and supervises projects to completion. Relationship Building: Develops strong working relationships with physicians, senior management, administrative leaders, and other stakeholders. Collaborates with internal groups to identify and implement innovations to improve delivery and access to healthcare. Serves as a resource to subordinates on complex business planning activities and projects. Advises senior management with respect to implications of various growth strategies. Actively participates within UCDH departments to identify opportunities that further development of strategic clinical, educational, and business strategy proposals. Leads strategic efforts through relationship management to define shared vision and terms for new business lines and initiatives that require the development of formal agreements and extensive implementation plans. Communication: Represents UCDH Business Development in organization-wide and external meetings and discussions as a champion to promote a structured and disciplined process to execute on external facing deals. Actively communicates and promotes the departments services, scope of services, and capabilities to ensure awareness and utilization of business development team to explore and analyze new concepts and innovations. Cultivates an environment to foster strong employee competencies in management practices, external relationship development and cross-functional collaboration. OVERVIEW OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE Required Qualifications: Masters degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, or a closely related field with over eight years of experience in health care consulting, hospital or healthcare operations, strategy, and business development; or a combination of education and experience. Demonstrated several years or more people management experience and demonstrated skills necessary to be responsible for leading strategic business case development and planning activities at an organization level. Advanced ability to direct, influence and motivate staff, project team members, senior executives, physicians, and leaders at partner institutions. Ability to interact positively with senior executives, providers, and staff at all levels both within UCDH and with external community institutions. Advanced skills to lead business planning, innovation development, and implementation for a multi-faceted health system through the oversight of business development staff and cross-functional teams with diverse functional disciplines, including executive level leaders. Highly advanced verbal and written communication, facilitation, and presentation skills including the ability to positively interact with executives, providers, and staff at all levels. Demonstrated skills and experience to provide training/mentoring for business development staff. Preferred Qualifications: Highly developed knowledge and experience in healthcare strategy, business development, and innovation activities. Demonstrated experience in for-profit, non-profit, and start up environments, in large academic healthcare setting with knowledge of or ability to learn UC Davis Health organization, structure, clinical, research, and administrative departments.
