The Associate Controller position is a senior financial leadership role responsible for overseeing budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting functions for a university with revenues of $1.5 billion. Reporting to the Controller, the role involves leading a team of 14 permanent employees and seasonal accounting support positions through 2 Director positions. The ideal candidate must possess a professional accounting designation and demonstrate a high level of university and strategic acumen. Key responsibilities include developing and implementing university-wide accounting policies and procedures, overseeing the preparation and review of annual audited financial statements, managing the annual external audit process, and providing timely financial management information and reports. The role also involves capital, trust, and endowment fund accounting, fraud prevention controls, disbursement management, and serving as a designated signing officer for large cheques. Additionally, the Associate Controller is responsible for leading the coordination and preparation of the annual consolidated budget, fund budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses, as well as acting as a consultant to the Budget Committee and ensuring strategic revenue distribution to support academic missions and operating priorities. Developing relationships with internal and external partners, staying abreast of Canadian accounting standards, and implementing best practices are critical aspects of the role.
