Opportunity Details
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) seeks a seasoned, collaborative, and innovative leader to serve as the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs (AVP), to oversee university dining and student affairs facilities and housing operations. This AVP is also responsible, through student affairs facilities, for the student centers. This requires working closely with other AVPs and directors that are not direct reports, to ensure smooth operations. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the AVP for housing, dining, and student centers, leads one of the largest teams at the institution. With two direct reports and roughly 850 salaried and wage professional staff and more than 1600 student staff between the two units, the AVP must lead with integrity, humility, and transparency. The AVP for Student Affairs will provide exemplary leadership and vision for Dining Services and Facilities and Housing Operations and will be an excellent advocate for the financial and operational needs of the units. The AVP will work collaboratively and openly with their teams and the leaders of each unit to maintain the excellent service provided to the Virginia Tech community and will continually evaluate their services and facilities to ensure safety, high quality, efficiency, accessibility, and best practices. With both a student- and community-centered approach and a creative and progressive vision, the AVP will be an active, engaged, and visible leader who motivates and values staff and represents and advocates for their needs. Through clear communication and visibility, accessible and varied channels for staff feedback and input, and meaningful engagement with staff at all levels, the AVP will develop a culture of trust and openness within the organization and across the institution. With a strong background in the management of complex organizations, the AVP will be highly detail oriented, a quick study, calm and steady under pressure, an effective project manager, an empathetic and supportive supervisor, an excellent communicator, and an engaged member of Virginia Tech community who is committed to the mission and goals of student affairs and the institution.
